There is no magic involved here. Every speaker, microphone, cellphone, spy bug, hidden camera emits its own magnetic field. iPhones are equipped with a magnetometer (used by the compass), and Dontspy can read the data captured by the magnetometer to detect and report the presence of magnetic fields emitted by spy bugs, cellphones, microphones, metal objects, and other devices that emit a magnetic field. The reading needs to be done in close proximity to the object you are searching for.

With Dontspy, you can transform your iPhone into a magnetic field detector, metal detector, or electronic device detector for finding smartphones, spy bugs, microphones, and more!

Please note that the app cannot distinguish between a metal object and a smartphone or between a spy bug and another electronic device. Therefore, it will display "found" even if a metal object is detected. To get accurate results, make sure to perform searches away from metal objects.

Keep in mind that on iPhones, the magnetometer is located on the upper right side, while on iPads it's at the back top center.
